Marriage and Family Therapists who obtain the MFT license or LMFT designation have met high educational and clinical experience criteria. All states require a Master's or Doctoral degree and in CT over 1000 hours of supervised clinical experience.
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs)

Marriage and Family Therapists broaden the traditional emphasis on the individual to attend to the nature and role of individuals in primary relationship networks such as marriage and the family. MFTs take a holistic perspective to health care; they are concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families.
MFTs have graduate training (a Master's or Doctoral degree) in marriage and family therapy and at least two years of clinical experience. Marriage and family therapists are recognized as a "core" mental health profession, along with psychiatry, psychology, social work and psychiatric nursing. There are an estimated 48,000 marriage and family therapists in the United States and Canada. All laws regulate marriage and family therapists at the independent level of practice.
I’m a Certified Discernment Counselor having completed rigorous training through the Doherty Relationship Institute and the DRI Alliance for Marriage and Divorce Professionals. Certified Divorce & Family Mediator
I completed initial mediation training at the renowned Ackerman Institute in New York City and completed my advanced divorce and family mediation training at Quinnipiac University Law School in Connecticut. I work as a guide/arbiter with families in conflict to resolve issues of concern and with divorcing couples co-create a binding separation agreement that is filed with the courts dissolving the marriage. AAMFT Approved Supervisors have a breadth and depth of MFT clinical and supervisory experience, and they stay involved in the professional MFT community. They are committed to refining their clinical and supervisory skills, and they participate in ongoing professional development through their affiliation with the AAMFT.

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy. AAMFT members meet rigorous standards for education and training and are held to the highest ethical standards of the profession. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery in 10-12 sessions and 90% show significant improvement. It is a present-focused, non-blaming, humanistic, and client-centered model. It is currently the best delineated and most empirically validated couples therapy of the past 25 years.
NYCEFT Lifetime Member: The New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy provides training and supervision to mental health professionals in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Our clinical trainings are recognized by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, directed by Susan Johnson, Ed.D. and can be applied toward becoming a Certified EFT Therapist.
